The Texas Chapter of the National Society of Accountants for Cooperatives is once again offering a seminar for a variety of cooperative personnel---accountants, bookkeepers, and controllers.  The objective of this seminar is to provide important tax, accounting, legal, and human resources updates.

8:00 a.m. Legal Update for Cooperatives: Gary McLaren, McLaren Law Firm, PLLC
Gary McLaren is the most decorated co-op lawyer in Texas. Gary was born in Abilene, Texas. He practices general civil litigation in federal and state courts with experience representing clients involving business transactions, insurance defense, cooperatives, and agricultural matters. Gary holds a degree in finance from Texas Tech University and served as a commercial loan officer for eight years prior to obtaining his law degree
from South Texas College of Law in Houston.

After the presentation, NSAC meeting attendees will better understand the recent tightening standards of courts
as to co-op matters, fiduciary duty issues with co-op directors, and future legal challenges for co-ops

Participants will earn 1.0 CPE credits

8:50 a.m. The Economics of Cotton on the High Plains: Dr. Darren Hudson, Texas Tech University
Dr. Darren Hudson is Professor and the Larry Combest Endowed Chair for Agricultural Competitiveness and Director of the International Center for Agricultural Competitiveness. Hudson earned his B.S. In Agribusiness from West Texas A&M University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Agricultural and Applied Economics from Texas Tech University. He has been a Professor at Mississippi State University and a Farm Foundation Fellow. Hudson's research interests include agricultural policy and trade, economic development, marketing and consumer demand, and behavioral economics. Hudson is a past-President of the Southern Agricultural Economics Association.

After the presentation, NSAC meeting attendees will better understand the linkages between cotton and the overall economy of the region, examine the importance of crop insurance to cotton producers, and the regional economy and explore the outlook for cotton for 2023.

10:20 a.m. Labor Standards in Agriculture: L.D. Harper, U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division
L.D. Harper is an investigator with the United States Department of Labor. LD has been with the department for seven years and is currently stationed in Lubbock, TX. He is widely recognized for his Wage and Hour expertise.

After the presentation, NSAC meeting attendees will better understand the general role of the Wage and Hour
Division at the Department of Labor, the most common problems Wage and Hour see with small ag businesses/ag
coops, and what can trigger an investigation from Wage and Hour and what to expect if an investigation occurs.

12:35 p.m. Changes Like Never Before: The 2022 Internal Fraud Update: Steve Dawson, Dawson Forensic Analytics, PLLC
Steve Dawson is the President of Dawson Forensic Analytics, PLLC and for the past 28 years has performed forensic investigations, internal control design consulting, accounting records reconstruction, and forensic training services for various business entities located throughout the United States, including the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC), and other state and federal regulatory agencies. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting, and holds
Certified Public Accountant certificates in Texas and Arizona. He also holds a certificate as a Certified Fraud
Examiner.

After the presentation, NSAC meeting attendees will understand the nature of changes in the perpetration of internal fraud resulting from the pandemic, the shutdown, and the return from the remote work environment, the types of “hot frauds” that seem to be recurring since the pandemic, and participants will obtain an understanding of internal controls.

1:50 p.m. Accounting and Auditing Update: Greg Taylor, D. Williams & Co.
Greg Taylor grew up on a six hundred-acre cattle and cotton farm south of Ralls, Texas. He is a shareholder with D. Williams and Company, P.C. in Lubbock, and oversees the firm’s assurance, litigation support and valuation services. He joined D. Williams and Company, P.C. in 1989 after working with Doshier, Pickens & Francis, P.C. in Amarillo, Texas and in the Lubbock office of KPMG Peat Marwick. Greg received his B.B.A. in
finance and accounting from West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M University) in 1983 and his M.B.A. from West Texas State University in 1988. Greg served as the National President of NSAC in 2008-2009.

After the presentation, NSAC meeting attendees will better understand employee retention credit, and receive important updates regarding accounting standards and audit standards.

3:20 p.m. Microsoft Excel Instruction & Tips: Dr. Corey Evans, Texas Tech University
Dr. Corey Evans is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Accounting at Texas Tech University. She received her PhD at Texas Tech University in 2019), MSA at Texas Tech University in 2012 and BBA at The University of Memphis in 2008.

After the presentation, NSAC meeting attendees will obtain an understanding of essential tips used to maximize efficiency when using Excel, will be exposed to some formulas and functions commonly used by accounting professionals, and will understand how Excel can be implemented in different ways to improve their business functions.
