Course Description

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC), highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development, particularly their impact on poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration. With the theme of “Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World”, designating 2012 as the Year of Co-ops sought to encourage the growth and establishment of cooperatives all over the world. It also encouraged individuals, communities and governments to recognize the importance of cooperatives in helping to achieve internationally agreed upon development goals. In recognition of IYC, communities all over the world initiated programs and conducted events to celebrate and promote the co-op business model. This presentation tells the stories of certain notable co-op efforts in eight communities here in the USA. These stories highlight the richness and diversity of the co-op movement here in the United States.
