Different software options for automating the exemption certificate management process are described. You also learn how to develop a sound exemption certificate policy within your company and understand the exemption certificate life cycle.
• Exemption Certificate Audits: You will learn what to expect from a state sales tax audit. You'll also learn about common errors on sales tax exemption certificates so you can avoid them and be you'll be taken through an example of a sales tax audit.

Course Description
Chances are you are or will be audited for sales and use taxes if your company sells products or services to other companies. As States are looking for additional revenue, sales and use tax audits have increased as it is a valuable and quick way to increase revenue. It is important to have the proper sales tax exemption certificates maintained and filed for those sales or your company could be subject to negative state audit findings and even fines and penalty charges. This presentation is designed to provide the basic information needed to prepare a company to properly file and maintain sales tax exemption certificates and to prepare to successfully defend against any state sales tax audits.
Presenter and Moderator Bios
Presenter: Silvia Aguirre , President, Tax Technology Services, LLC
Silvia Aguirre is president of Tax Technology Services, LLC (TTS), where she has overall responsibility for the operational efficiency of the organization, as well as the tax knowledge base. Silvia has been instrumental in the development of new products and services, such as the popular CertCapture suite of services which is used by many leading organizations. Previously, served as an Auditor for the State of Texas, in their San Antonio and New York offices, after her audit career, Silvia served as tax manager for National companies in manufacturing, retail and technology industries. Silvia holds several degrees including a Certification in State and Local Taxation from University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. She earned her BBA in Accounting from The University of Texas, Pan American, and her MBA from Tulane University. Matthew MacNeil is the Senior Vice President Operations of Tax Technology Services, LLC. Matt helped found TTS in 2002 and has since managed IT, process design, and quality assurance. He also was a principal designer of the CertCapture ECM Solution. Prior to joining TTS, Matt was the Accounting Manager at ePhysician, Inc., a medical technology company in California, where he managed the accounting software system. Prior to that, he worked as the Controller of several divisions of Methode Electronics. Matt holds a BS in Accounting from Purdue University and an MBA from Tulane University

Delivery System
- All programs are delivered using the Zoom platform.
- Confirmations will include log-in instructions.
- Participants are able to participate using any device with an Internet connect (if the device does not have speakers, the participant can also dial-in) or they can participate with audio only by dialing in.
- All registrants will receive a link to the CLN’s recording by email within 48 business hours of event’s conclusion.
- There will be assistance available to help with technical and connectivity issues up to 10 minutes prior to the start of the presentation.
Registration
All registration is done on-line and each guest must provide their name and email address to participate. All NSAC members may register for free. Non-members may register for a nominal fee.
Refund Policy
NSAC will not issue refunds for CLNs. If a registrant is unable to participate in the CLN and provides notification to info@nsacoop.org 48 hours prior to the session, a credit will be provided for a future CLN. Alert the NSAC staff member monitoring the CLN if technical difficulties are encountered and technical support will be provided to eliminate problems with future CLNs.
Additional Information
Live participation is required for CPE credit and polling questions must be answered to document your active participation. All registrants will receive an email following the session with links to the slides and/or handouts, and a link to the CLN recording (unless otherwise stated). If you are unable to participate in the live session, you can still watch the recorded session, but you will not be eligible for CPE credits. Those eligible for credits will receive their certificate by email with 7 business days.
